J C Waite  1832–1920  was an accomplished and successful English genre and animal painter when he arrived in Melbourne in 1886.  He had been a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy, London and was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists.
He remained in Australia for the rest of his life and is particularly well known for his portraits and his landscapes of the Ovens Valley.
