Ferdinand Bauer was an Austrian botanist who travelled to Australia with Matthew Flinders in 1801 on the HMS Investigator. They circumnavigated the Australian continent til 1803 but were unable to return to England until 1805 as the ship required repairs. Bauer used the time to sketch the unique flora and fauna. A large collection of his pictures are in London's Natural History Museum.
