'Hilda Rix Nicholas (1884-1961) had returned to Australia in 1918, and then, in October 1919 left Melbourne for Sydney to settle in Mosman. In 1921 she painted A Man, one the finest paintings of the Great War, it was the distillation of the grief that the war inflicted on this gallant and talented artist.'
