The Missing Photograph
A collection of short stories
"Every now and again as a literary agent I come across a manuscript of persuasive originality. The Missing Photograph collection is one of those and will resonate particularly with anyone who grew up in the 1970s and 80s. A theme of these pieces is the nature of photography, how it works and how it manages its limitations. Early photography is touched on, as are the ideas of photography theorists.
Given the ubiquity of the mobile phone, Christopher Race’s keen observations may stimulate many readers to modify their photographic diaries so to better record the present. As Christopher says:
“My book is about what photographs can show and words can explore.”
John Timlin
Some essays are forensic in their examination of the image and other stories use the image to launch into trajectories of their own. Then again some of these images remain virtually untouched by the story seemingly assigned to describe them. Yet others can only be made sensible by the accompanying text.
