'Mr. J. H. Scheltema is still true to his cattle creed. Nobody can paint cattle as well as he does, and he wisely keeps to that in which he excels. His kind are always possessed of artistic instincts, too, that impel them to group themselves picturesquely whenever they see a silver mist arising, and for this they deserve special commendation, for all artistic instincts in animal or man deserve encouragement. An exhibition without one of Mr. Scheltema's clever cattle studies would be like a lock without a key.' Table Talk, 20th September 1895, page 6, Victorian Artists Exhibition
