In 1870 Carse was a foundation member of the Victorian and the NSW Academies of Art and exhibited regularly through the decade. In 1880 the professional artist members seceded from the NSW Academy to form the Art Society of NSW, with Carse again a foundation member. At the Inaugural Exhibition of that year, he exhibited "ten paintings mainly of scenes on the south coast of New South Wales", with another ten in 1883, two in 1884 and nine in 1885 (Scheding, op. cit.) so the above painting could date from any of those years. He painted scenes of Bermagui, Tilba Tilba, Wallaga Lake, Mount Dromedary amongst others. Mt Dromedary was named by Cook who, seeing it from off-shore, was reminded of the animal. It is now known by its original name Goulaga and has always held sacred status in Aboriginal culture.
