Water has a great attraction for Ludmilla: she loved to paint harbour scenes and boats. She found the River Yarra in Melbourne a source of inspiration. She wandered up and down the tiver banks from Princes Bridge to Port Melbourne.
Ludmilla was born in Latvia in 1908 to a large farming family near the town of Baldone. She studied at the Latvian Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 1940. She married economist, Otto Meilerts who shared her passion for art and came to Australia in 1948, via Stuttgart and amazingly her first exhibition was held there in 1946 in the Refugee camp.
