Frederick George Reynolds was born in Surrey. He began wood engraving at the age of 18, and a little later pencil and color sketches. He painted directly from nature. He was a law student but with long vacations had time for extensive travel, and visited France and Germany, making numerous sketches of the Seine and the Rhine. He exhibited continuously at the old Watercolor Society and the Royal Academy from about 1860 till late in the nineties. He made the British Isles his painting ground, and his most fascinating studies were in North Wales, South Scotland, Derbyshire, Sussex, Surrey and Kent. He lived in London in the old parish of Islington, and the great metropolis supplied him with many subjects. He illustrated the Thames from Greenwich to Richmond, and his poetic brush drew to him many lovers of British landscape. From 1896 until the end of his life, at the advanced age of 96, Highgate and Hampstead in every season of the year inspired him. He is represented in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and many public and private collections.
His son, Frank Reynolds, was also an accomplished artist who spent his working life in Australia.
