A Queensland artist with works represented in State galleries throughout Australia. 

Read was born in Fitzroy and studied at the National Gallery School.  He moved to Sydney, where he stayed for 10 years before going to Innisfail as a grocer, painting only on week-ends, but rode a bicycle 140 miles to Cooktown to sketch landscapes. It was a painting of a Cooktown street which won for him the Wynne prize for landscape in 1955.

About 1960 he taught at the Central Technical College in Brisbane. He was a trustee of the Queensland Art Gallery in 1969, and also won the H. C. Richards Memorial Prize.

Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts London in 1970. He died in England
