Ebenezer Wake Cook was born in England in 1843. He came to Australia with his parents in 1852 and lived in Melbourne and Geelong. He studied at the National Gallery of Victoria's School of Design in 1870–72, was a foundation member of the Victorian Academy of Arts in 1870, and in 1873 travelled to England to pursue a full-time career as a painter.
During 1867 and 1868 E. Wake Cook was employed by Nicholas Chevalier as his assistant. Chevalier had been commissioned by the Duke of Edinburgh to prepare a series of drawings of Victoria and New Zealand.
