Daniel Rutter Long was from Oxfordshire in England. He decided to emigrate to Australia, arriving in Melbourne with his family in late 1840. He set up a pharmacy in Bourke St., Melbourne, and in 1856 his son and son in law took over the business. His son-in-law left in 1861 and Daniel resumed only to retire fully in 1880. His youngest son, Mr Charles William Long, died in Sydney 1921. He was one of the oldest members of the Sydney Stock Exchange at 73 yrs old.
