In 1956 Elaine Haxton was one of a group of eleven Australians who were chosen to be part of the Australian Cultural Delegation to visit China. Haxton had been fascinated by China ever since she was a child and she found the visit inspiring. This painting was painted the year after she returned and attempts to capture the spirit and traditions of the Chinese culture
