This landscape is probably the Palo Dura Canyon near Amarillo, Texas

Nolan visited Texas in 1958 while on a Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellowship in New York.  He, Cynthia and Jinx arrived in New York in July 1958 in the middle of a heatwave. They decided to escape the heat and went on a road trip across America for 5 weeks.  They crossed through the Panhandle of Texas on Route 66.  refer Open Negative, An American Memoir by Cynthia Nolan, Macmillan, London, 1967
