Kovaleva studied at the Tavrichevski Art School in the 1950s and at the Repin Academy, 1960-1965, under Prof. Oreshnikov. From 1965 to 1968, she was assistant to Oreshnikov. In 1969, she joined the Artists' Union. She was Professor of Drawing at the Repin Academy in St. Petersburg
