The City and Princes Bridge
Pencil drawing “At the Athenaeum Art Gallery seven painters in water-colours are having a show… Of this number Mr. James D. McMahon is the best, inasmuch as he draws well, has a sympathetic attitude toward the medium, and has observed the atmosphere that surrounds his subjects. His colour is good, and his technique is fresh. His lack of experience tempts him to tackle fearsomely difficult subjects. Long-distance panoramas are fraught with all sorts of exasperating problems, particularly when circumscribed by the size of half-imperial sheet of paper. He sees too much. He Is as Intensely interested in a sky as in the landscape itself. The result is an irritating chaotic pattern. His simpler studies are excellent, and if he perseveres on these lines he is bound to do good work” review by Harold Herbert, The Australasian (Melbourne, Vic. : 1864 - 1946) Saturday 30 March 1935 p 16
