This is a study for Portrait of Robert O’Hara Burke 1862. The finished watercolour is in the collection of the National Library of Australia and the oil painting is in the Melbourne Club The image has been reversed in the final painting Biographical information on William Strutt in Australian Dictionary of Biography
William Strutt began recording the Burke and Wills Expedition in June when the camels arrived in Melbourne. During August he made several visits to Royal Park, attended the special service given by Dean Macartney and even followed the explorers out to Essendon with a photographer to record more details of the expedition.
