E. Wake Cook came to Victoria in 1852 with his parents and lived in Melbourne and Geelong, During 1867 and 1868 he was employed by Nicholas Chevalier as his assistant and studied at the National Gallery of Victoria’s School of Design in 1870-72. He was a foundation member of the Victorian Academy of Arts in 1870 and continued to exhibit with them long after his return to England. In 1873, Cook travelled to England to pursue a full-time career as a painter. He exhibited with the Royal Academy between 1875 and 1919 and the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street between 1874 and 1880
