Christopher Heathcote, Patrick McCaughey & Sarah Thomas (Ed. Maudie Palmer), Encounters with Australian Modern Art, Herman Editors, France (Macmillan Publishers, Melbourne), illus p 143: "...Clarke found a new confidence in the less ideologically exacting 1970s. Clarke had a particular sympathy for the texture painters of Spain and Italy, most notably Antoni Tàpies, when European contemporary art was held in low regard by many younger Australian artists. Although resolutely abstract, his ribbed and rubbed surfaces and the expressive use of texture was enough to exclude him from The Field exhibition. But in the looser 1970s Clarke re-asserted himself in such emphatic works as the gestural 'Blue on Grey', 1974." (McCaughey, op. cit. p 131)
