At Dunkeld, near the Grampians, Shay made a series of drawings based on the burnt-out weathered redgums

One of the artist's earliest works of a fire-gutted tree is dated 1945, when she was 17. (see plate 1, The Landscape as Metaphor, Prunster, AH & AW Reed) Forty-two years later she returns again to this motif
