Samuel Elyard was a public servant and landscape painter. He studied under Conrad Martens and John Skinner Prout, specialising in landscape painting in watercolours and oils. He exhibited in Sydney in 1847 and 1857 and in Paris in 1867. He lived in Sydney and Nowra, NSW. His work is represented in the State Library if NSW, Art Gallery of NSW, the National Library of Australia, Manly Gallery and Shoalhaven City Council
