Owen Hammond
Owen grew up surrounded by art. With an artist mother, Mary Hammond and architect father, art was a part of everyday life. After finishing a course in Fine Art at RMIT he made and exhibited silkscreen prints from the early 1980s.
I used to buy Owen's screenprints forty years ago to give to newborn nieces and nephews and was delighted when Owen recently brought in his remaining stock, including many prints I had not seen before. Many are the last copies.
Owen worked as a production weaver at the Victorian Tapestry Workshop (now the Australian Tapestry Workshop) from 1985 and worked on many important commissions including the Parliament House Tapestry by Arthur Boyd; John Olsen’s Rising Suns Over Australia Felix and John Coburn’s St George Tapestry.
His sculptures were first exhibited in 2011 at Mailbox 141 Flinders Lane and Scott Livesey Galleries. He has won prizes in the Toorak Village Sculpture exhibition, including 1st Prize in 2014 and 2024. He has been a regular exhibitor at the Linden Postcard Show, and the Yering Station Sculpture Exhibition, (2nd Prize) ,the Toyota Sculpture Exhibition and the Lorne Biennale.
