George F. Lawrence was a very well regarded Australian impressionist of the 20th century. Lawrence studied at the famous Sydney Art School in the old Queen Victoria Building under Julian Rossi Ashton. He later studied in London and Paris. He was lifetime friend with William Dobell who mentored him. Lawrence’s first exhibition was held at the Macquarie Galleries in 1945 which referred to Lawrence’s landscapes as having ‘a permanent place in Australian tradition.’
