Sealers in Western Port

Lithograph
13 x 17.7 cm

"The two earliest views of Victoria were published in the atlas volume of the account of the explorer Dumont D'Urville's Voyage de la corvette L'Astrolabe ..1826-1829, published in Paris in 1833. .. On 12 November 1826, the ship entered Westernport Bay where five sealers with Tasmanian Aboriginal wives had erected huts and were cultivating gardens, wheat and maize. Habitation de p?cheurs de Phoques au Port Western (Nouvelle Hollande) shows a hut on high ground, while on a path below the sealers bring in part of the catch accompanied by dogs. Vue prise au Port Western dans la crique des Mangliers is by contrast is a highly romantic conception of a group of sailors hauling in a fishing net under the setting sun." Victorian Vision: 1834 Onwards, Images and Records from the National Gallery of Victoria and the State Library of Victoria, Christine Downer and Jennifer Phipps, published by National Gallery of Victoria, 1985 page 7- 8
This German version was published in 1837
