‘Senbergs took Barcelona – the city, it’s history, planning and architecture – as his principal theme during his three-month tenure. Partly through reading Robert Hughes lively monograph on the city and partly through exploring on foot, he became fascinated by the contrast and collision between the rambling medieval city that clustered around the harbour and the new city, the Eixample, of the late 19th century build to a rigorously geometric plan. It provided the perfect motif to use his map-making methods for urban landscapes… Barcelona II, completed back in Melbourne, is the final, abstract distillation of the motif. Senbergs derived the dark, profiled shape – almost like a shield or coat of arms – from a poster by Miro. The series ended with the city of Barcelona concentrated into an emblematic symbol.’
In October 2001 Jan and Helen Senbergs had a three month residency at the Australia Council Studio in Barcelona
