Built in the early 1800s, the Pont des Arts or Passerelle des Arts is a metal foot bridge which crosses the Seine. On one side is the central square of the Palais De Louvre and on the other is the Institute de France which defines itself as the “…protector of Arts, Literature and Science". In more recent times the Pont des Arts has become known as the lock bridge with thousands of visitors to Paris attaching locks to the bridge as a symbol of enduring love, throwing the key into the Seine. In this delightful sketch, from a viewpoint above the bridge, Nada captures a wintery Paris, with perhaps a working barge in the foreground. The blues, greys and greens with a hint of pink on the barge roof create a calming vista. The view looks back towards the Palais de Louvre, Ile de Cite and Notre Dame in the distant skyline. It’s been interesting to discover that over their careers, many of the post-impressionists were painting similar themed pictures en-plein air, of the Seine as a working river. Both the bridge, and the view, which will have changed over time, will be worth checking out on your next trip to Paris! Joyeux Noel
