Silvia Marguerita Fausset Baker;  1892 Malta - 1970 England
Painter, illustrator, actor and author;  studied at the Slade School of Art, London under Professor Tonks from 1916.  Exhibited 1928-1937, New English Art Club, Society of Women Artists, Royal Society of British Artists and the Redfern Gallery; Solo exhibitions, 1932 at the Warren Gallery and Zwemmer Gallery; worked for the Manchester Guardian producing illustrations of zoo animals; a set of her prints was published by the Carnaby Press, 1924, and 'Portraits in the London Zoo', published by Putnam,1925; In 1933 she married Athole Hay,  son of the American art collector, Athole Stanhope Hay, (1861-1933).

Tragically her husband died in 1938 after a fall, two months after her mother's death.  Distraught, Silvia spent much of the next 12 years travelling to Asia, West Indies and USA during the war years, returning to London in 1944 wrote and illustrated 'Alone and Loitering - an Artist's Travel Diary, 1938-1944', and 'Journey to Yesterday', both published by Peter Davis in 1946 and 1950; she continued to travel until 1950 and to exhibit until 1963.  Died in Bath in 1970.
