This is an impressive painting in its magnificent original huon pine frame. Gould was a convict artist transported to Tasmania in 1827. He was best known for his still life paintings like this as well as fruit and flower compositions. Similar examples are in the collection of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Victoria.
