In 1956 Elaine Haxton was one of a group of eleven Australians chosen to be part of the Australian Cultural Delegation to China. Haxton had been fascinated by China ever since she was a child and found the visit inspiring. Sampan was completed the year after she returned and attempts to capture the spirit and traditions of the Chinese culture
