Kay Stewart

Born 1942

Kay Stewart studied at the National Art School, East Sydney,  for 6 years before travelling to London where she studied at the Central School of Art, the Kokoschka Summer Academy in Salzburg, Austria (where she was awarded the  prize for drawing and watercolour) and the Summer Academy of fine art, Perugia, Italy. Upon returning to Australia she studied at the Victorian print workshop.

The artist’s work has appeared in English publications along with the age newspaper, Melbourne (where she continues to work as a contributor), the Australian newspaper, the bulletin, the Canberra times and numerous magazines. She has illustrated a number of books including images of Melbourne compiled in collaboration with Geoffrey Dutton, a book on international food, the international cookbook,  and two editions of the age good food guide.

She has exhibited in numerous group shows and has had a number of solo shows. Along the way, she has received various awards. Her work hangs in private collections in the UK, Belgium, Hong Kong, Singapore, Greece, New Zealand and most Australian states.

Now based in Melbourne, the artist has lived, worked and travelled in London, Europe (including 8 trips to Italy), Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Bali, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and New Zealand. Sketchbooks compiled throughout the travels provide the material for the artist’s on-going work.
