Nick Botting

Born 1963

Nick Botting is a celebrated English plein air artist who has developed a strong following here after a number of exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth over the last 15 years. The vivid immediacy of his approach captures, in a truly engaging way, the feel of streets, parks, sporting events and the everyday things that people do.

While in Australia, Nick Botting recorded families at the beach in Brighton and Hampton, cafe life at Pellegrini's, the action at the MCG and the lack of? in the Reading Room at the State Library of Victoria. He was the official artist covering the English Cricket Team's tour in Pakistan in 2000/01, where he sat in the stands and painted the crowds and action as well as recording the team meeting the Queen - a challenge because, as one critic in The Observer put it, one can hardly ask Her Majesty to hold a pose or do it again! This painting and Botting's portrait of Sir Ian Botham are both hanging in Lord's Museum.

He is also in the collection of the Melbourne Cricket Club as well as in the private collections of Lord Salisbury, Andrew LLoyd Weber and Sir Ian Botham, among many others.

He has won several awards including the Robertson Award and Founder's Prize from the Discerning Eye Exhibition in 1997 and 2008 respectively, as well as being highly commended for the BP Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery in 1989-90 for his self portrait done in the Australian desert with the use of a mirror.
