Sunshine Bouncing Off Water
These new folios of dreams are the deal I did with Joy.
Whole buckets of water sloshed out over the new water color paper. Add to it the accidental drying effects of sunshine or fog or Indian Ink or school board chalks of all persuasions - as I am sometimes teaching in schools as their guest so it is inevitable that chalk is always in my jacket pockets - then I add industrial acids or permanent food dyes to give the whole thing an incredible life of its own. It comes unbidden before the love of detail to finish it off. It might take a month to do one. So that each new one seems a break through.
I use things in my drawings that resist and fight me so it’s a war of drying-speeds and water-additions and light washes of diluted inks that add the transparent luster I am hunting for with all my concentration and nonchalance and obedience to pleasure.
The alchemy is complete only after I have re-engraved the spontaneous early washes and bucketings of tap water mixed with an obsession with design and harmony so the picture becomes something to do with fairies or goblins or grotesques spotted in gnarled elm trees or bent letter boxes or gnomes appealing to me from busted whitewashed picket fences or anyone or thing I see during my rambles, which are endless. The imagery arrives from that which I carefully look into and then reinterpret as a new dream of mine.
