During 1867 and 1868 E. Wake Cook was employed by Nicholas Chevalier as his assistant. Chevalier had been commissioned by the Duke of Edinburgh to prepare a series of drawings of Victoria and New Zealand. In January 1868, the Duke of Edinburgh visited Hobart on the Galatea
