Sport and Pastimes

Sport and Pastimes

6 - 28 October 2017

This exhibition pays tribute to our seasonal obsession with football, both AFL and NRL, as well as the impending Spring Carnival which culminates at Flemington with the Melbourne Cup.  The Grand Final and the Melbourne Cup are unusual for providing the locals with a public holiday for each. So, with so much enthusiasm for sport, I have put together a collection of paintings and prints by artists of note.

Featured in the exhibition are paintings and drawings by the late Clifford Bayliss whose genius was recognised by the eminent art historian, Bernard Smith, and also by Francis Bacon, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd and most artists with whom he came into contact. Bayliss won the National Gallery Travelling Scholarship in 1935 and left Australia to further his career in London where he spent the rest of his life. You may have seen his brillliant work in the recent Surrealist exhibition at the NGV.

Bayliss had a lifelong fascination with horses and, growing up near Moonee Valley and Flemington, he spent much time drawing the horses while training. Finally producing his Horse and Rider Series in the 1970s.

This collection also includes paintings by the English plein air painter, Nick Botting as well as Barry Humphries, Eric Thake; Robert Dickerson; Charles Blackman; Celia Perceval; Melbourne plein air artist Mary Hammond and, given the popularity of cycling, I have included linocuts by Mike Rubbo.

The title of this collection is inspired by the distinguished American novelist, James Salter’s A Sport and a Pastime: “Remember that the life of this world is but a sport and a pastime…”   Koran LVII 19
