Clifford Bayliss 1912-1989
Biography
1912 Born in Footscray on the 22nd June
He was educated at the Geelong Road Primary School and
Footscray Technical School and trained as an engineer with the Footscray engineering company, Mephan Ferguson
1931-35 Attended the National Gallery School. Won the Travelling
Scholarship in December 1935
1936-37 Travelled to England. Crossed France and Germany, largely by
bicycle. Studied in Paris at André Lhote's studio and at the
studio of Paul Jouve the animal painter
1938 Living in London. Admitted to Royal Academy Schools,
attended until March 1939
1939 Worked as an excavation plant manager
1940-45 During the War, in charge of a Rescue Squad based at St. Giles, London
1945 Worked with Harry Freeman FRGS developing devices for
photographing the interior of the stomach
1946-55 Assistant to photographer, Geoffrey Gilbert
1955-63 Worked as production assistant at the Royal Opera House,
Covent Garden
1963-89 Taught part-time at London College of Printing, the Central
School of Art and Design and Croydon College of Art and
Technology. Freelance work for Benjamin Brittens' English
Opera Group
1965 An exhibition of drawings, gouaches and decor held at the
Leveson Street Gallery, Melbourne, opened by John Sinclair
1989 Died in London on the 5th June
