From the close up, angst ridden approach of the face studies to the raw humour of a Y-fronted ‘Smike’ in a Tom Roberts background, the brothers aim to humanise and demystify the artist, asking "if highly regarded artists of the past were around today, what would they be painting?" The answer is often irreverent and usually challenging.
The Butterworth’s work both individually and collaboratively. When working together Daniel mostly begins, layering paint till he feels he can't add anything more before handing it over to Matthew to apply his vision of life.
